Coffee, customers and bass fishing

An interesting trend the past few years has been the inclusion of coffee scent and/or grounds into soft plastics. Strike King Lure Company first came up with this concept, and there are a couple of theories swirling about how it actually came about. Suffice it to say, however it happened, it’s here, and probably here to stay.

One of the perks of owning my own coffee company, Deep Blue Coffee Company, I have access to some of the best coffee beans in the world. And pouring my own soft plastics for my Traverse City Bass Guide Service allows me to experiment with coffee in my own line of soft plastic baits.

It’s been a fun experiment, putting different formulations of coffee into my plastics. I’ve experimented with different textures of grind fineness, coffee oils, and even different blend… by using fresh roasted coffee from my coffee company, I know that I have fresh coffee oils as opposed to rancid coffee oils most commonly associated with coffee sold in most grocery stores. I’ve also noticed that my plastics that contain coffee grounds in them have a very natural hue to them—much more so than regular plastics without coffee. I’m convinced. And the bass seem to approve as well. My customers and I have enjoyed tremendous success while using my soft plastic baits that have been impregnated with coffee grounds. It’s no longer a trend for me – now it’s a staple.

One of my Deep Blue Coffee Company’s proprietary blends, Traverse City Bass Blend, has a tag line “Wake the Bite.” I came up with this tagline, in part, because this is the coffee I serve to my customers to begin each guide trip morning, but to also wake the bass up with a tremendous coffee scent. It’s the exact coffee that I use when I pour my soft plastics, so hopefully it’ll serve as a vehicle to wake the bass up as well as myself and my customers!
