Jose Wejebe

The fishing world tragically lost an icon a few days ago. Not only was he well-known in the fishing industry, Jose Wejebe was a true gentleman of the sport, having seemingly done it all. Equally skillful with conventional spinning and baitcasting gear, Jose could fly fish with the best of them, presenting a fly flawlessly time and again. Guide, accomplished tournament angler, celebrity/television personality, and all-around terrific champion for others, Jose had a knack for always bringing out the best in people. Always upbeat, Jose seemed to find the best in any situation.

It’s hard to think of a positive coming out of the tragedy surrounding his recent death, but perhaps it is that we all pursue what we’re passionate about, as Jose did, and did so well.

Perhaps best known for his television show, Spanish Fly, which aired on ESPN2 and most recently on the Outdoor Channel, Jose showcased not only his prowess as an angler, but highlighted those that he fished with, in stunning fashion. Drawn to the beauty and majesty of the ocean and its creatures, Jose frequently had artists as guests. Here, their artwork was seamlessly woven into the fabric of his show. My wife and I always enjoyed tuning in to Spanish Fly on lazy Sunday mornings when I wasn’t fishing, while he was still on ESPN.

Not only is Jose’s passing a shock to us all in the fishing industry, it’s sad for me on a personal note. Before I became a full time fishing guide, I reached out to Jose for some advice. Not only did he take the time to answer, he was gracious enough to be very encouraging, sharing with me some of his thoughts on starting out as a guide.

Though Jose Wejebe didn’t guide as much in his recent years, what he did do was donate his time to various charities. Through fishing, he was an ambassador for numerous causes. This is something that I strive towards and hope that I can be as successful as he was in this regard.

I was never able to share a boat with Jose, but his words of encouragement to me mean the world. I believe that we shared a kindred spirit of sorts. A true passion for the outdoors, and for fishing, but beyond that, I feel that we shared a passion for life, and the beauty that it encompasses.
