Nothing marks the kickoff of the new trout season, or has anglers around the state more excited about one particular day, than the trout opener. Sure, there are limited waters available all year, but tomorrow’s opener to all waters has anglers drooling.
Guide trips have been planned months in advance for this day. Sometimes, even a year or more in advance. All in anticipation of casting to trout that haven’t yet been made wary by a season’s worth of boat traffic and bad presentations. The trout are rested, and hungry from winter. Anglers have been waiting months for this day, and have checked and re-checked their rods, reels, knots and fly boxes countless times. It’s a great day.
Spring has sprung early this year, so it’ll be interesting to see how the fishing goes. I started to see butterflies back in mid March! Who knows how early the mayfly hatch will be. For now, though, who cares? It’s all about tomorrow’s trout opener. And on that note, I think I should check my gear once more. Just in case.
